Commercial Locksmith Cost in Chicago: What Affects the Price

Two businesses can call about the same problem, such as an employee leaving with a key, and get very different quotes. The price depends on how many doors are involved, what hardware is already there, the condition of the doors and when the work happens. Jose M. Hernandez Jr., owner of Omega Locksmith in Chicago, explains what drives commercial locksmith pricing and how to get a quote you can compare.

What affects the price

Number of doors and cylinders

A storefront may have one entrance and a back door. An office or warehouse may have dozens of cylinders, including padlocks, cabinets and gates. Count them before you call.

Rekeying versus replacing

Rekeying compatible cylinders keeps your existing hardware and is usually the lower-cost option. Replacement adds parts and labor. Read rekey or replace your locks and rekeying vs changing locks cost.

Hardware grade and type

Commercial locks are rated by ANSI/BHMA grade, and heavier-duty hardware costs more. Mortise locks, exit devices, restricted-keyway cylinders and electronic locks each carry different parts costs.

Condition of the door

If a door drags, does not latch or has a failing closer, the real fix may be the door, not the lock. That can add work, but skipping it often means paying again later. See warning signs your commercial door needs attention.

Electronic and access-control work

Keypads, card readers, electric strikes and magnetic locks involve hardware, programming and sometimes power or wiring. Read our commercial keyless entry guide.

Key systems

Planning a master key system or CX5 restricted-keyway system involves design and record-keeping as well as pinning cylinders.

Timing

Many locksmiths charge more for nights and emergencies. Omega Locksmith does not charge extra at night, so a break-in at 2 a.m. is priced on the work, not the hour. Whoever you call, ask before they head out whether they add an after-hours fee.

How to keep the cost down

  • Rekey cylinders that still work well instead of replacing them.
  • Plan which doors should share a key before work starts, so it is done once.
  • Combine several jobs into one visit.
  • Send photos of each lock and door ahead of time so the right parts come on the first trip.
  • If you have regular work, set up a commercial account.

What a good quote includes

  • The doors and cylinders covered.
  • Whether each lock will be rekeyed, repaired or replaced, and with what hardware.
  • Labor, parts and any service-call or trip charge.
  • Anything that could change the price after inspection.

Be cautious of a very low phone price that grows once the technician arrives. Our locksmith hiring checklist lists the questions to ask. For home and car pricing, see how much a locksmith costs in Chicago.
