Rekey or Replace Your Locks? How a Chicago Locksmith Decides

When old keys are out there or a lock starts acting up, you have two options: rekey the lock you have or replace it. Rekeying changes the pins inside the cylinder so a new key works and the old keys do not. Replacement installs new hardware. The right choice depends on the condition of the lock, the door and what you need the lock to do.

Jose M. Hernandez Jr., owner of Omega Locksmith, explains how our technicians make that call.

When rekeying makes sense

  • The lock works well. It turns smoothly, the bolt extends fully and the door latches every time.
  • You only need to cut off old keys. This is the usual case after a move-in, a tenant change or a lost key. See when to rekey after a move-in or eviction.
  • You want one key for several doors. Locks of the same brand and keyway can often be rekeyed to match.

Rekeying keeps the hardware you already have, so it is usually the simpler and less costly job. For typical prices, see rekeying vs changing locks cost. Learn more about our lock rekeying service in Chicago.

When replacement makes sense

  • The lock is worn or damaged. Sticking keys, a loose cylinder or a bolt that will not fully extend are signs the hardware is near the end of its life.
  • There was a break-in or forced entry. A lock that was attacked may look fine and still be weakened.
  • The hardware is light-duty. An inexpensive lock on an exterior door may be worth upgrading rather than rekeying.
  • You want a different kind of lock. Moving to a deadbolt, a keypad, a smart lock or a restricted keyway means new hardware.
  • Your locks cannot share a key. Different brands and keyways may not be able to match without replacing some cylinders.

See lock installation and replacement for the hardware we install.

What a locksmith checks before recommending either

  • Whether the door closes and latches without lifting or pushing.
  • Whether the bolt lines up with the strike and the frame is solid.
  • Wear on the cylinder and the key.
  • The brand, keyway and door preparation, which decide what hardware will fit.

A lock cannot secure a door that does not close properly. If the door, frame or closer is the real problem, fix that first. Businesses can see our commercial door services and door closer repair.

Be wary of pressure to replace everything

A locksmith should explain why a lock needs replacing instead of rekeying. Be cautious of anyone who quotes one price on the phone and a much higher one at the door, or who insists on drilling a lock that could be picked or rekeyed. Read how to avoid locksmith scams in Chicago.

Before you call

  • The address and the number of locks.
  • Photos of each lock from both sides of the door.
  • What is wrong: lost keys, sticking, damage or an upgrade.
  • Whether you own or manage the property.
