Lock rekeying for Chicago homes, rentals and businesses
Moved in, lost a key, or had an employee or tenant leave? Rekeying changes the inside of your existing lock so the old keys stop working. You keep the hardware and get new keys.
Omega Locksmith rekeys residential and commercial locks in our shop at 4346 W 51st St or with mobile service at your property, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Proof of residence or owner/manager authorization is required before any lock is rekeyed.
When to Rekey Your Locks
You Just Moved In
Previous owners, tenants, contractors and real-estate agents may still have keys. Rekeying makes sure only your keys work. See when to rekey after a move-in or eviction.
Keys Were Lost or Stolen
If a key is missing, especially with your address or car nearby, rekeying removes the risk without replacing every lock.
Tenant or Roommate Turnover
Landlords and property managers rekey between tenants so former residents cannot get back in.
Employee Left the Business
When staff leave with keys, rekeying restores control of your store, office or warehouse. Read our guide to rekeying after an employee leaves with business keys.
Too Many Different Keys
Compatible locks can be rekeyed to work with one key, so you don’t carry a key for every door.
After a Break-In
Once the scene is released, we check the door and lock and rekey or replace what is needed.
Residential Lock Rekeying
We rekey front and back doors, deadbolts, knob and lever locks, garage entry doors and many smart locks that use a key cylinder. Houses, apartments, condos and two-flats are all common jobs.
Need every door on one key? Tell us when you call and we will key them alike where the locks are compatible.
Commercial Lock Rekeying
We rekey storefront cylinders, mortise locks, office doors and storage rooms for Chicago businesses and managed properties. For buildings that need different access levels, we can set up a master key system.
To stop employees from copying keys, ask about CX5 restricted keyways.

Lock Rekeying FAQs
What is the difference between rekeying and changing locks?
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so a new key works and old keys don’t. Changing locks replaces the hardware itself. If your locks are in good shape, rekeying usually costs less. Our guide to rekeying or replacing your locks explains how to decide. For typical prices, see rekeying vs. changing locks cost.
Can all my locks work with one key?
Often, yes. Locks from the same brand and keyway can usually be keyed alike. If your locks are different brands, we will tell you which ones can share a key and what options you have for the rest.
Can every lock be rekeyed?
Most standard residential and commercial cylinders can be rekeyed. Some low-cost, damaged or worn-out locks are better replaced. We will tell you before doing the work.
Do I need to be home for rekeying?
For mobile service, an authorized adult must be present to show proof of residence or authorization. You can also remove the cylinders and bring them to our shop.
Should landlords rekey between tenants?
Yes. Rekeying between tenants keeps former residents and anyone they gave keys to from entering the unit. It is a common request from Chicago landlords and property managers.
